Many people in their quest for the riches readily available on the net overlook a simple method to bringing in an extra few dollars a month. This is a time heavy ordeal mostly dealing with promotion. The more you promote your proxy, or in this case proxies the more traffic and in turn the more money you will make. Their are two different major schools of thought on how to use a proxy to make money. As you will see ahead their is a never ending demand for proxies that work. This can be a gold mine if you can play your cards right.
One of those schools is to simply charge outright for a clean browser window free of ads. While this is effective many will not pay before using. I highly recommend you also offer a free to use method with say an hour time limit per 8 hours. This way you can let them see how quick the proxy is, and still collect some ad revenue from your free users. Most will happily pay a modest charge to unlock whichever sites it is that are normally blocked for them I would suggest being modest on your pricing.
The other school of thought is to simply load the proxy full of ads, be from Konterra, bidvertiser, or adsense.
Now that you have the general idea lets walk through deploying, promoting and cashing in on a proxy.
The first thing you will want to look into is a domain. Honestly you want the domain to naturally lend itself to its daily work. Domains with Unblock, surfto, school, you get the point. I would generally avoid things with the word proxy them self as they tend to stand out to people watching logs, etc. This being said my proxy, BigBenPattonsProxy.Info works very well all things considering. Think of what your end goal will be, to flip this proxy for sale or to continue to use it to bring in a cash flow.
As most everyone already knows if you use the code “OYH3″ as a coupon code when purchasing a dot com domain from godaddy you will only pay $7.19.
Now you have your shiny new domain. We need to find some hosting to attach this to and have ready for the next step. Host Gator, and GoDaddy do not allow proxies to be hosted from their servers. I am sure it would be possible to, but the resulting suspension or banning might not be worth the risk. Personally I was told about a company that charges very little and is set up specifically to handle the demands which a proxy can put on a server. I recommend you head over to Hagio Host. Their servers are specificly tweaked for the rigours of a proxy. The lowest package with a modest amount of space and monthly bandwidth is only 4.95 a month. Once you have secured your hosting be it with Hagio or another proxy approved hosting company you will need a proxy script / template.
Their are a few different flavors to choose from here. PhProxy is no longer supported but works well enough and is open source. GLIDE is much nicer and still supported but a little harder to setup. Once you have read your manual and installed your script you are ready to monetize your proxy. If you have choosen to go the subscription route you will have gotten a different script which will set this up for you more than likely using paypal.
If your like me and just wanted to see if anyone would actually use your proxy you will be using adsense, bidvertiser, and Konterra. Keep in mind you are not allowed to use adsense on the proxified pages as its against the TOS for adsense. We will keep the adsense ads on the landing page, and on the proxified pages we will use bidvertiser which is adsense like for a header, and konterra within the content of the proxified pages.
This has potential depending on how many you run under different domains to earn you alot of cash every month. The best way to get the word out about your proxy is to use every means available. Social Networks, Social Bookmarks, Google, Yahoo, groups, etc. You will need to advertise 1-2 times daily atleast. Once your traffic is coming in your earnings will be right behind them.
For those of you interested in creating profitable proxies to flip later for cash, you would simply use a forum such as digital point or site point. I highly recommend site point as it comes recommended by others more often.
It is possible to earn 10-20k a month with proxies, but it will be no easy task. Make sure to keep an eye on your bandwidth usage and upgrade as needed. If you see massive amounts of traffic die outs it means your proxy is being blocked by the entities which the people using it wanted to pass. This is where you can flip the site, and start all over again.

hmmmm, Ben…..I think it’s time for a much needed conversation between us….lol. I don’t really fully understand the concept behind proxies….I mean I know the theory, well, I guess I do understand it, but, I never knew this was an avenue you could use to monetize.
I just thought you were another IT geek with your own proxy
Don’t worry, I am an IT geek, so, I’m talking about myself!
But, I don’t have a proxy, and have never thought about one until today.

If you have the time and can put the effort into several at the same time you can make very nice money, and then flip them to someone else for double up. Rinse and repeat.

hmmmmm, very interesting. I guess I didn’t realize there was that much of a demand for proxies.

Its actually quite insane how many are out their, popular and in use, and how many more could be easily put into just as much use. It nothing more than a matter of effective monetization and promoting it.
You the man Ben….like I said, this never even crossed my mind before.
